ATHABASCA LOOKOUT
This trail is regarded as one of the most picturesque viewpoints in the region.
For those looking for a shorter hike with spectacular views, look no further than the Athabasca Lookout. This 1 km hike uphill ends with a breathtaking view of the Rocky Mountains and surrounding foothills. The trail can be accessed from the parking lot at the far end of Hinton Nordic Centre road. Those looking for a connector trail can walk the ridge north of the lookout and descend into the Joachim Valley, eventually meeting up with the Jarvis Lake campground.
This trail is regarded as one of the most picturesque viewpoints in the region. From the parking lot at the far end of Hinton Nordic Centre road, hike 1 km uphill to be rewarded with the stunning views of the Rocky Mountains and surrounding foothills. Continue along the ridge trail for 3 km where giant sandstone boulders and cliffs dot the landscape, creating a climbing playground. The trail descends steeply into Joachim Valley. Continue along Joachim Valley Trail for another 2.5 km to connect to Jarvis Lake Campground.
Dogs are permitted on trails, but should be kept under control at all times. Owners must clean up after their dogs.
Wildlife has the right of way – beavers, deer, elk, moose, black bears, wolves, grizzly bears and cougars may be encountered in the Hinton area.
Fires are not permitted on or adjacent to town trails. Help reduce the risk of forest fires.
